Baramulla, Nov 12: Researchers and Scientists from different Universities on Wednesday deliberated upon the advancing climate resilience, drug discovery and epigenetic medicine.

The speakers were part of the inaugural session of the two-day national conference on frontiers in basic sciences organised by the Government Degree College for Women, Sopore.

During the conference, the speakers spoke on the idea of the conference and hailed the college administration for holding such a productive conference, saying that it will prove beneficial for young minds.

In his address on the occasion, Principal Amar Singh College Aijaz Ahmad Hakak said that there should not be any sort of compromise with the environment, and society should remain disciplined in terms of managing and restoring the natural environment.

During the conference, as many as 60 abstracts were received, and the two-day conference will have different technical sessions as well.

In his address on the occasion, MLA Sopore Irshad Rasool Kar emphasised Sopore’s history and said the town was the only place based on a scientific basis.

“But due to some situations, all the erstwhile 11 Tehsils of Valley were upgraded to the district level, but Sopore, being the largest and oldest Tehsil, is still a Tehsil,” he said.

He said the base of the education system of the town was laid by the missionary people. “Be it horticulture or any other sector, its base was in Sopore first, which can be easily witnessed nowadays, especially in Baramulla. The first Degree College, Primary school were first established here. But our town lagged, which is very unfortunate,” he said.

He said that north Kashmir, especially Sopore, has set the base for the education sector and created dignitaries who are at the top level in contemporary times.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore Shabir Ahmad Raina and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Police Iftikhar Talib also spoke at the occasion.

In her address at the occasion, Professor AMITY University Dr Maryam Sarwat briefed about the importance of such conferences and their impact. She said that scientists sharing their research with the people makes it more impactful.

Later talking to reporters on the sidelines of the inaugural session of the conference, Dr Maryam said the facilities in the colleges need to be enhanced, considering the dedication of the students and faculty of the institutions.

“They (students and faculty) deserve better facilities for which the government should extend its support as well,” she said.

On student exchange programmes and making such scientific conferences relevant to the students, Dr Maryam Sarwat said student exchange programmes would always prove fruitful for the overall growth and development of the students. “And it depends on the students how much benefit they can reap out of these conferences. They should actively participate in these occasions,” she said.
