Fresh rains, snow in parts of Kashmir

Temperatures plummet; MeT predicts widespread light to moderate rain, snow with thunders during next 24 hours

Srinagar, Mar 13:  Parts of Kashmir on Wednesday received fresh snow and rains while the Meteorological Department predicted more precipitation during the next 24 hours.

Mild snowfall was experienced in higher reaches including Gulmarg and the hilly areas of Kupwara and Bandipora.

The fresh precipitation resulted in a cold wave across Kashmir where temperatures have risen during the past over a week.

The MeT officials here said that a Western Disturbance would bring widespread light to moderate rain or snow across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir from Wednesday.

The officials said that over the next 24 hours, there would be widespread light to moderate rain or snow, accompanied by thunders in J&K.

On Thursday, the weather would be partial to generally cloudy, with the likelihood of widespread rain or snow in most places in J&K. “From March 15 to March 20, the weather is expected to remain dry,” the MeT officials said.

Gulmarg ski resort in Baramulla and the tourist destination of Pahalgam experienced subzero temperatures, while other stations also saw a slight drop in temperatures on Tuesday night.

However, temperatures were above normal in all stations in Kashmir during this period.

Srinagar saw a slight drop in night temperatures, reaching a low of 5.4 degrees Celsius compared to 5.9 degrees Celsius the previous night and 1.7 degrees Celsius above normal.

Qazigund recorded a low of 3.4 degrees Celsius compared to 5.8 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag settled at 4.2 degrees Celsius compared to 4.4 degrees Celsius the previous night.

The night temperature in Pahalgam dropped to minus 0.5 degrees Celsius from 1.7 degrees Celsius a day earlier and it was 0.7 degrees Celsius above normal.

The temperature at Gulmarg ski resort improved slightly, reaching minus 1.2 degrees Celsius against minus 1.6 the previous night and 2.1 degrees Celsius above normal.

Kupwara had a low of 4.5 degrees Celsius against 4 degrees Celsius the previous night and 2.2 degrees Celsius above normal.
