Frequent water-logging
Due to the fresh spell of rains several areas of Srinagar are facing the water-logging. The movement of pedestrians in such areas becomes difficult. A similar situation had risen during the light snowfall some weeks back.
In fact this problem does surface up whenever there are rains or snowfall. Vehicular traffic movement also becomes slow on the submerged roads and leads to jamming. Not only small roads but even some major and important roads get submerged at a number of places.
There have been a persistent demand from the residents of such areas for a permanent solution to the problem. In some areas sometimes the dewatering pumps are pressed into service. Mobile de-watering pumps are also sent to some areas. The residents say that the de-watering pumps are not in sufficient numbers and that is why several areas remain water logged for long.
There is an immediate need to increase the number of dewatering pumps in the city. Secondly, there is also a need to go for proper drainage system in all the areas. A number of residential areas are without the drainage system.
Such areas should be identified and a process set into motion for having such a facility there also. Depriving any area of drainage system adds to the problems of the local residents. Also there are areas where the drainage system does exit but not working properly. This problem also leads to water-logging during rains or snowfall.
The defective drainage system must be replaced properly. Proper maintenance of the drainage system is also important and it is the responsibility of both the concerned authorities and the residents. The authorities must properly and regularly monitor the system. In case of any problem speedy measures have to be taken to put the things in right direction.
The residents must also ensure that drainage system is not damaged or blocked. Drainage system is not for carrying waste material. The owners of factories must take extra care in this direction. The water bodies also get polluted and emit foul smell when the waste material from the factories reaches there through drains.
The concerned authorities must ensure that this practice is not allowed and water bodies are protected from pollution.
