Freight earning new leverage for Jammu Railway Division
Jammu, Jul 24: Promoting goods transport as a new leverage to enhance its freight income, newly formed Jammu Division, after successful “cherry cargo” experience, has touched another milestone swiftly by transporting 46 tonnes of paper from Kathua to Assam.
Besides bolstering the finances of the railways and the state, the freight transportation move is also aimed at creating new employment opportunities for the local people.
“On July 23, 2025, a BCN wagon, carrying 627 paper bundles and 24 paper rolls, was loaded from Kathua railway station of the (Jammu) Division to Ajara railway station of Rangiya division in Guwahati, Northeast Frontier Railway, Assam. Total weight of goods transported was 46 tonnes,” said Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (DCM), Jammu Railway Division of the Northern Railway.
“With this, we have achieved another historic feat as a total 46 tonnes paper (reels or bundles) got loaded earning around 1.3 lakhs of freight for railways. It will be a big push to small, medium, large-scale enterprises or manufacturers in J&K boosting up the economy of the region,” Singhal said.
After the formation of Jammu Division, led by Divisional Railway Manager Vivek Kumar and Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, passengers and traders have seen many commendable works and developments – one of the major achievements is the freight transportation along with passenger safety.
Starting this freight transportation, the Division under the leadership of Senior DCM, on May 31,2025, loaded cherries in “Parcel One” in train number 12472 and transported from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Bandra Terminus.
“With this initiative, not only the goods of the fruit producers reached their destination on time, but also proved to be a big source of income for the division. Transportation of papers was a move forward in sequence,” Singhal stated.
“This is an important step for goods transportation. The business class is being encouraged to promote goods transport in Jammu division and meetings are being held from time to time by the officials of the division,” he said, adding, “Promoting this goods transport will increase the income of the railways and the state and will create new employment opportunities for the local people.”
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the division, also asserted that such initiatives would increase the freight capacity of Jammu division and ensure smooth movement of goods across the country besides strengthening the infrastructure of the railways.
