Free health camp for seniors held in memory of Naseema Akhter
Srinagar, Aug 13: A free health camp for senior citizens was organised in memory of Naseema Akhter, beloved family member of Kaloo and Mir families, who recently left for her heavenly abode.
Naseema Akhtar was the sister of Ghulam Hassan Kaloo, Editor The Mirror Of Kashmir, Dr Farooq Ahmad Kaloo, Fayaz Ahmad Kaloo, Editor Greater Kashmir, and the mother of Mir Aijaz Ahmad, Editor Kashmir Canvas.
The health camp was jointly conducted by GK Labs, Moul Mouj Foundation, and Kashmir Clinics Central at Moul Mouj Health Centre, Karan Nagar.
62 senior citizens from Sopore to Srinagar to Anantnag attended the camp. Each patient underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment and was provided free diagnostic investigations including blood tests, ECG, X-ray, USG, echocardiography and other essential tests, along with free medications as required.
Patients presented with a wide spectrum of conditions — from diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and urinary issues to dementia, depression, agitation, chronic pain, and more.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Zubair Saleem, Senior Geriatric Consultant, said: “Besides examination and treatment, we focused on awareness and counselling about four essential pillars of healthy ageing: a balanced diet (vegetables, fruits, eggs, lentils, homemade meat in moderation, chicken, low salt, sugar, and fat, with reduced white rice and maida), regular physical activity, adequate hydration, and quality sleep.”
He noted that while the ageing parents came from diverse districts — making it difficult to identify a single dominant health issue as seen in localised camps — one common observation was striking: “Parents well cared for by their adult children showed better cognitive health and better disease control than those who were, unfortunately, neglected.”
Dr. Shakeel ur Rehman, Chairman of Kashmir Clinics Central, reaffirmed the commitment to the cause: “We are dedicated to helping our seniors age with dignity. No elder should feel ignored or left behind.”
The Director of GK Labs stated that the organisation remains committed to extending reliable, accessible, and compassionate diagnostic support to the elderly.
The camp concluded on a positive note, with seniors expressing deep satisfaction with the services provided. Three senior citizens were identified for the Moul Mouj Lifetime Privilege Card, entitling them to free medical consultations, investigations and medicines for life. For those from remote areas, a teleconsultation protocol has been initiated to ensure ongoing care.
