Srinagar, Dec 17: Former two-time Member of Parliament (MP ) Ladakh and retired DIG Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.

He passed away at his residence at Bathandi in Jammu. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attended his funeral prayers in Jammu.

Born on December 11, 1936 in Simloo village of, Batalik, in Kargil district of Ladakh, Khan retired as DIG from Jammu and Kashmir Police and later became a veteran political figure in Ladakh. He was elected to 13th and 15th Lok Sabha as a Member of Parliament from Ladakh in 1999 and 2009 respectively. In 1999, Khan contested on National Conference ticket while in 2009 he fought as an independent candidate.

He was an active member of the influential religious organisation Anjuman Jamiat- Ul- Isna- Asharia Kargil. The former MP is remembered for his selfless services and work for the development of the Ladakh. Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan is survived by his wife, son, the former Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil and sitting Councilor Feroz Ahmed Khan and two daughters. The demise of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan has widely been condoled by various political, social and religious organisations.

Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Brig B D Mishra has expressed grief over his demise. “ It saddens me to learn about the demise of Ghulam Hassan Khan, who was a two-time Member of Parliament from Ladakh, in Jammu on the morning of December 17. A decorated IPS officer who held the post of DIG, Shri Khan also served as a Councillor of LAHDC Kargil,” LG Ladakh said. The LG added that, “ Khan was well-known for his dedication and discipline and served the people of Ladakh during his tenure as MP Ladakh. May the Almighty give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace. “

Member of Parliament Ladakh Mohammad Haneefa Jan condoled the demise of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan. “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan, a visionary leader, dedicated politician, and true statesman. A retired DIG and two-time Member of Parliament and a senior leader of National Conference, Khan Sahib devoted his life to the welfare of Ladakh and its people. His unwavering commitment to justice, progress, and unity leaves behind an enduring legacy that will inspire generations. Born in the picturesque region of Ladakh, his tireless efforts for the rights and aspirations of Ladakhi citizens have shaped the political and social landscape of the region,’ Jan said He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, including Feroz Ahmad Khan (former CEC Kargil), Hajia Zeba, Dr Kaneez, Dr Bilquis and Dr M Ali Khan. “ May Allah grant strength to the bereaved family and eternal peace to his soul. Your contributions will forever be etched in the hearts of the people you served so selflessly,” Member of Parliament Ladakh Haji, Mohammad Haneefa said.

Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon condoled the passing of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan. “ On behalf of LAHDC, Kargil, Chairman/CEC, Kargil, Dr Mohammadd Jaffer Akhoon expressed profound sorrow on the sad demise of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan, a retired DIG, a dedicated politician and a senior leader of the National Conference. The CEC said that Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan's statesmanship, determination and deep commitment to the people of Ladakh, especially during his two terms as Member of Parliament, will forever be remembered.

Social-Political activist Sajad Kargili expressed grief over the demise. “ We are deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Haji Ghulam Hassan Khan, a veteran political figure of Ladakh and a distinguished leader who served as a Member of Parliament twice. He was also a staunch supporter of Jamiat Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil, and his passing is a monumental loss for JUIAK Ladakh and the people of Ladakh,” Kargili said.
