Shopian, Oct 25: A five-year-old girl died after she accidentally fell into a water channel in Narwar village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday.

Officials said the victim has been identified as Nazima, daughter of Rayaz Ahmad Khatana, a native of Kalakot who was presently residing in Narwar, Shopian. Preliminary reports suggest that the girl accidentally slipped into a nearby nallah while playing close to her home.

Soon after the incident, locals and family members launched a rescue operation and managed to pull her out of the water channel. She was immediately shifted to the District Hospital Shopian, where doctors declared her brought dead.

A police officer confirmed the incident and said that all necessary legal formalities have been completed. “The child had accidentally fallen into the nallah near her residence. She was evacuated to the hospital where doctors confirmed her death. Proceedings under relevant sections have been initiated,” the officer said.

Authorities said the matter is being treated as an accidental death, and further verification is underway. The body was later handed over to the family for completion of last rites. [KNT]
