Fight against drugs, bovine smuggling: 146 arrested for drug peddling in Udhampur in 9 months
Jammu, Oct 1: Police have arrested 146 drug peddlers and 165 bovine smugglers in Udhampur district in the past nine months as a part of its relentless action against narcotics and bovine smuggling.
“101 cases were registered under the NDPS Act from January to September 2025 in Udhampur. A total of 146 drug peddlers were arrested, including 133 under NDPS and 13 under PIT NDPS and PSA,” Police said.
45 vehicles used in narcotic smuggling were seized and 8 pharmacy shops were sealed for violating H1 drug norms. According to Police, financial action led to the freezing of 54 bank accounts linked to drug traffickers, involving Rs 17,47,812.
“Narcotics worth Rs 7.91 Cr were seized, including heroin, charas, poppy straw, and ganja. Further strengthening enforcement, property worth Rs 5.42 Cr was attached under NDPS provisions - including houses, trucks, cars, bikes, flat, land, scooties and saving accounts,” Police said.
Additionally, 2 kanal 10 marla of illicit opium cultivation was destroyed in Panchari.
“Professional investigation and prosecution led to 37 convictions in 28 cases, reflecting Udhampur Police’s firm commitment towards a drug-free society,” the Police spokesperson said.
On the front of action against bovine smuggling during the same period i.e., January to September, 2025, a total of 145 cases were registered, resulting in the rescue of 978 bovines from illegal transportation.
“173 persons were arrested in connection with these cases, including 165 under bovine smuggling offences and 8 under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Moreover, 104 vehicles used for transportation of bovines were seized and 20 registration certificates of such vehicles were cancelled. 67 convictions were secured during this period, demonstrating the district police’s strong legal follow-through,” Police said.
Additionally, property attachment proceedings were initiated in five cases involving 1 Tata Mobile (forfeiture), 2 Mahindra Bolero pickup trucks and one Tata Yodha, with an estimated total value of Rs 51 lakh.
