Shopian, Jan 29: In the serene landscapes of south Kashmir's Pinjora village in district Shopian, Faizan Gulzar, barely 12-year-old, picked up a sword and shield at a local martial arts' school to learn the sport.

With dreams of making his mark in the world of martial arts he has clinched national and international laurels on his journey to greatness.

He practiced rigorously for several years before competing in national and international tournaments.

In 2023, Faizan clinched gold at the National Sqay Golden Championship held in Baghwati Nagar Jammu, from January 30, 2022, to January 2, 2023.

Not content with resting on his laurels, Faizan continued to push boundaries, aiming to win an international championship. His skills and determination were on full display at the 7th South Asian Sqay Championship in Nepal, where he earned a silver medal.

The championship was organised by the Sqay Federation of Nepal, which saw participants from across South Asian countries.

“I aimed for gold but finished with silver,” said Faizan. Despite narrowly missing the top spot, he viewed the experience as invaluable.

"During the championship, I have learned the importance of strategy, adaptability, and resilience," Faizan told Greater Kashmir.

Last year, Faizan was offered an opportunity to participate in a world championship held in Uzbekistan. However, he was unable to participate in the event as he lacked the necessary travel documents.

"I hope I get more such opportunities in the near future," he said.

Faizan’s mentor and coach, Mohammad Tahir, expressed confidence in his mentee’s potential. “He has what it takes to carve a niche for himself in the world of martial arts,” Tahir said.

The district, known for its rich talent in sports, has seen a surge in interest in martial arts among the youth.

In the area, more than 300 young boys and girls practice different forms of martial arts, earning various medals and accolades for their achievements.

Tahir is optimistic that Faizan's achievements will inspire many in the area to excel in the sport.
