Fact Check: Reports suggesting Kashmir’s renaming as Kashyap are false

Srinagar, Jan 03: A wave of misinformation has swept across social media and certain news outlets, falsely claiming that Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggested that Kashmir could be renamed as “Kashyap.”

This misleading narrative has caused unnecessary confusion.

Upon thorough verification, it was found that the claim is baseless and misrepresents the statement made by the Home Minister.

During a book launch event, Amit Shah merely referred to Kashmir as the “land of Kashyap” and speculated that the Kashmirs name might have historical links to the sage Kashyap. At no point did he suggest or hint that the name of Kashmir could be officially changed to Kashyap.

The relevant excerpt of Amit Shah’s statement reads: “Kashmir is also known as the land of Kashyap. It is possible that Kashmir may have been named after Kashyap.” This historical observation has been distorted by certain outlets, sparking unnecessary speculation.

The circulation of this false information has led to widespread criticism from various quarters in Kashmir, with journalists, political leaders, and civil society members urging media houses to exercise greater responsibility while reporting sensitive matters.
