Experts highlight new frontiers in respiratory diagnostics at GMC Baramulla
Baramulla, Nov 2: The Department of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, in collaboration with the PURE Foundation, Pune, organised a CME-cum-hands-on workshop on “Advanced Lung Function Assessment.”
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Majid Jahangir, Principal, GMC Baramulla, in the presence of Prof. (Dr) Shafqat Ahmad Lone, Registrar Academics; Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent; Dr. Shumail Bashir, Associate Professor and Head, Department of TB and Respiratory Medicine; and course directors Dr. Sundeep Salvi and Dr Deesha Ghorpade.
In her welcome address, Dr Shumail Bashir, the organising chairperson, outlined the objectives of the workshop. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Majid Jahangir underscored the importance of adopting advanced diagnostic tools in respiratory care, particularly in Kashmir’s cold climate, where respiratory ailments are common.
The academic sessions featured lectures on diverse diagnostic modalities: Spirometry by Dr Aqeel Hussain, Assistant Professor; FeNO (Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide) by Dr Shumail Bashir; Lung Oscillometry with a focus on paediatric applications by Dr Deesha Ghorpade; and DLCO and Body Plethysmography by Dr Sundeep Salvi.
The event witnessed active participation from faculty, postgraduate residents, and medical students. Eminent respiratory specialists, including Prof. (Dr) Naveed Nazir Shah, Head, Chest Diseases Hospital, and Prof. (Dr) Sonaullah Shah, Head, Department of Medicine, SKIMS Soura, contributed valuable insights to the scientific discussions.
A hands-on training session followed the lectures, offering participants practical exposure to state-of-the-art lung function testing equipment and techniques.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by the organising committee, marking the end of a productive and academically enriching event.
