Exam Row: Cluster University Srinagar admits only 50% syllabus completed by IT department

Srinagar, Sep 5: The Cluster University (CU) Srinagar on Thursday admitted the delay in completion of the syllabus by some departments in the constituent colleges of the varsity.

The statement comes a day after Greater Kashmir reported about the incomplete syllabus and highlighted the plight of students.

The University in a statement said that the semester 9th examination for its integrated programmes were scheduled on the basis of the completion report submitted by the course coordinators.

"The course coordinators confirmed completion of at least 80 percent of the syllabus. In the case of the Information Technology department, the course coordinator has stated that 50 percent of the syllabus has been completed," the University statement reads.

It reads that the department has been advised to complete the pending syllabi within a fortnight following which the students can appear in the exam from September 17 of 2024.

The University statement reads that a meeting with the course coordinators of five-years integrated and PG programmes was convened on August 29 to ascertain the factual position about the completion of the syllabi of courses before notifying a date-sheet for 9th semester exams.

"The course coordinators, through Principal SP College, have clearly informed that about 80 percent of the syllabus of IG and PG programmes running in SP college has been completed,” a statement of CU Srinagar reads.

While admitting that the syllabus was not 100 percent completed, the University has claimed that the students who oppose the notification of the date sheet "have not been attending the classes regularly."

“As a result they have not been able to complete their syllabi. So their allegations are baseless," the statement reads.

Notably, the 9th semester students of the Zoology and Chemistry department of SP college had complained that their course was incomplete due to non-availability of the equipment in the laboratories.

The CU Srinagar has however passed the buck to the Higher Education Department (HED) while stating that it does not float tenders or allocate funds to the colleges.

“The university neither floats any tenders nor allocates funds for construction or renovation purposes to its constituent colleges. The funds for such purposes are provided by the HED," the statement reads.

On Wednesday, Registrar CU Srinagar Prof. Wilayat Rizvi said that they were ascertaining about the problems faced by the students in the constituent college.

"All the five constituent colleges have been granted Rs 61 lacs for augmentation of laboratories," he told Greater Kashmir.
