Ex-Jharkhand CM Champai Soren placed under house arrest amid tribal protest

New Delhi, Aug 24: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Champai Soren was placed under house arrest on Sunday as a preventive measure during protests by tribal groups against land acquisition for the proposed ₹1,000-crore RIMS-2 hospital project in Ranchi’s Nagri area, police said. According to PTI, Soren’s son Babulal and several supporters were detained while heading towards Ranchi.

Security has been tightened across the city with barricades and additional police deployment. As reported by The Mint, the protests are being led by tribal farmers who allege their land was forcibly acquired for the project.

Soren had earlier announced plans to join the “Hal Joto, Ropa Ropo” agitation in support of the affected villagers. Police said further measures have been taken to prevent escalation, even as the issue has reignited tensions over land rights and tribal protections in the state.
