Every cricketer with talent deserves a shot: EVCL owner Vikas Dhaka

Srinagar, Apr 17: As cricket in Kashmir continues to evolve, new leagues are stepping up to provide a platform for emerging talent. One such initiative is the Epic Victory Cricket League (EVCL), backed by former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan. EVCL aims to unearth and uplift talent from the margins.

In an exclusive conversation, Greater Kashmir’s Sub-Editor (Sports) speaks with league owner Vikas Dhaka, who shares insights into the vision, structure, and future of the tournament.

Q: First, tell us your name and the title of this league. What is its purpose?

A: My name is Vikas Dhaka, and our cricket league is called EVCL — Epic Victory Cricket League. The idea behind it is to give local kids a platform based purely on their talent. Many players who aren't considered top-tier never get opportunities. This league is for them — to showcase their potential and get noticed.

Q: How did the idea come to you?

A: There was not any big masterplan. One day, I was sitting and thinking that if everyone else is doing something, why not us? From there, it just took off. We faced many challenges along the way, ups and downs, but we kept going. Now, we are here.

Q: You mentioned that some players are used and discarded from other leagues. Can you elaborate?

A: Yes, it happens a lot. Some organisers use a few players for their benefit and then move on, leaving others behind. Our goal is to promote those kids who belong to the lowest economic classes, those who are often ignored despite being talented.

Q: Where will the matches be held?

A: Most of our matches will be held in Jammu and Srinagar. We are currently covering three regions — Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. This is our first trial season, starting June 15 and ending July 31.

Q: So are you planning to expand across India eventually?

A: Yes, for now, we have limited it to two states and a UT, but we plan to take it to a pan-India level in the next phases.

Q: How many players are you targeting from these regions?

A: We plan to draft 300 players in total, distributed across 6 franchises, with each team having 16 players — one of whom will be a major international player.

Q: Will there be a separate team for Jammu and Kashmir players?

A: No, the teams will be mixed. We don't want to divide by region. Everyone will share the same platform, play together, and learn from one another.

Q: Can we say this is like IPL?

A: I hope so. That's the kind of impact we are aiming for.

Q: Will there be auctions like IPL?

A: No, there won’t be auctions. Franchise owners will pick players based on trial stats and overall performance. We have a dedicated team working to track all the data.

Q: And how are you collecting these stats, specially in J&K where records may not be easily available?

A: We are conducting trials in 22 cities. It’s a thorough process. Our team is handling all the player assessments on the ground.

Q: What kind of support have you received from the government?

A: The government has been very supportive. They liked our proposal and are backing us at every level.

Q: Irfan Pathan’s name is associated with the league. What role will he play?

A: We can't disclose his exact role yet, but yes, he is with us. His presence will be significant, and you’ll see that as the league unfolds. There are also other international players involved.

Q: What are your expectations from this league, specially in a place like Kashmir?

A: Everything looks positive. The energy is great. We are confident that this will succeed. Our slogan says it all — "Naya Format, Naya Dhamaka."

Q: Will the matches be day and night fixtures?

A: Yes, we will have two matches every day — one during the day and one at night.

Q: Any message for the youth of Kashmir and aspiring cricketers?

A: Yes — come forward, join us, and support us. We’re here for you, and we’ll take you to the next level.

Q: Lastly, in today’s time, many events have political influences. Is EVCL politically connected?

A: Not at all. This is purely our own effort. It’s the hard work of my team. The government is supporting us as a developmental initiative, but there is no political agenda involved.
