Ever shifting sands
No picture in this museum of global politics is to last for ever. On any given day what looks like the most defining moment, pales in front of another big turn of events before long. This has been the hallmark of power politics at the global scale. Who could have imagined, when the cold war between the USA and the USSR was at its peak, that the Berlin wall would come crumbling down soon. When the USSR troops went deep into Afghanistan and the USA, as a countervailing force, decided to pump in military resources to bleed the communist giant, who could have imagined that some years later it would be the US troops fighting the same Afghans who it armed against the Russians. But that is how global power dynamic keeps shifting like the dunes in a desert.
Similarly, when the world became a unipolar order, with the US emerging as the lone supervisor of the global order, none could predict that within two decades China could emerge as a new key player.
In the middle east, when a kind of status quo had taken root, everything changed for worse with one event on 27th October. From that day onwards the global order looks like falling apart. One by one the countries in the middle east started falling into this deadly conflict. The signs of any ceasefire, and a consequent order, now look like a far fetched dream.
In such a situation one can only pray for peace and an order that can at least stop the humanitarian crisis. If the current scheme of power politics doesn’t succeed in finding any worthwhile arrangement to stop active hostilities at multiple places, the world is bound to suffer deeper and more widespread crises. It will make the populations world over suffer in more than one ways.
For the countries in the world that are not in active conflict, in this overall power game, it is time to place their weight in favour of peace. If the smaller, and militarily less significant, countries can rally around the idea of peace, no wonder they can impact the power dynamic in a significant way.
And then, one never knows, when some turn of events can create a new global dynamic.
