Srinagar, Mar 21: Like other parts of the country, the deeply revered Islamic practice of ‘Etikaf’ commenced in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday evening, marking the beginning of a spiritually enriching phase for devout Muslims. Etikaf, observed during the last ten days of Ramadan, involves self-isolation in a Masjid, where worshippers dedicate themselves to prayers, Quranic recitation, and self-reflection. The primary aim is to draw closer to Allah, seeking divine mercy and blessings, while also ensuring one’s presence during Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, which is believed to be the holiest night in Islam. Derived from the Arabic root ‘akafa’, meaning “to adhere” or “to stick,” Etikaf signifies an unwavering commitment to worship and devotion.

It is regarded as a highly rewarding practice in Islam, with Prophet Muhammad (SAW) himself regularly observing it during Ramadan.

Participants of Etikaf detach from worldly affairs, fully immersing themselves in spiritual activities, including prolonged prayers and deep contemplation. This sacred period also serves as an opportunity for self-evaluation, allowing individuals to strengthen their faith and strive for moral and spiritual purification. Special arrangements have been made in Masjids across Jammu and Kashmir to accommodate those undertaking Etikaf. Masjids have been adorned with lights and banners inscribed with Quranic verses, creating a serene and conducive environment for worship. Authorities and local Masjid committees have ensured that participants have all necessary provisions to facilitate their spiritual retreat without any discomfort. In Srinagar and other districts, hundreds of worshippers have commenced their spiritual seclusion in prominent Masjids and Madrasas, including Darul Uloom Raheemiya in Bandipora and Masjid Murshideen in Kupwara. These centers have made elaborate arrangements to host a large number of devotees, reinforcing the region’s deep-rooted Islamic traditions.

Religious scholars emphasise the significance of Etikaf, highlighting that it is not just an act of devotion but also a means to cleanse one’s heart and rejuvenate spiritually. They urge participants to make the most of this blessed period by seeking forgiveness, praying for the well-being of humanity, and striving to strengthen their connection with Allah.
