'Ethical practice extremely important for a medical professional'

Baramulla, May 29: Addressing the graduating students of Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla, the Secretary, Health and Medical Education, Dr Syed Abid Rasheed Shah delivered a compelling message during the passing out event of the first batch of MBBS and BSC paramedics at Government Medical College Baramulla on Wednesday.

A first batch of 2019 MBBS students and 80 BSC paramedics graduated from the Govt Medical College Baramulla. The event was organised to facilitate the GMC graduates for their next journey as a medical professional.

On this occasion, the chief guest stressed the importance of continuous education, empathy, and ethical practice for emerging medical professionals.

In his speech to the first batch of pass-out students, Dr Syed Abid highlighted the critical need for ongoing learning in the medical field.

He said, "There is a continuous scope for learning, especially for medical professionals. Once a medical professional feels he is knowledge-proof, it means he is closing the window to new knowledge, which can prove to be a failure for him."

Dr Syed Abid also stressed the importance of empathy in patient care. He urged the new graduates to adopt an empathetic approach. “Empathy towards patients is key to success. There is a need to treat patients in a decent and respectful manner."

He said that effective communication skills are crucial, as the degree of a doctor's communication can determine their success or failure.

Stressing on ethical practice, Dr Syed Abid said, "Ethical practice is extremely important for a medical professional. Patients must be treated with care and respect." He advised the graduates to work collaboratively, noting that teamwork is essential in the medical field.

He also pointed out the challenges posed by well-informed patients in the internet age. "In the present era, patients can challenge doctors with the knowledge they gain from the internet. Therefore, a doctor should be clinically strong and needs to regularly update himself,"he said and stressed on the importance of time management for medical professionals.

The event was attended my several officials of the district including Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, Principal GMC Baramulla, Prof Dr Ruby Reshi Principal GMC Srinagar, Dr iffat Hassan, Principal GMC Anantnag Dr Rukhsana, Principal GMC Handwara Dr Dr Khursheed MS GMC Baramulla, Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, besides faculty members, doctors and others.

The event was followed by a variety of programmes showcasing the talent of the students which added a festive and celebratory atmosphere to the farewell.
