Srinagar, Dec 1: The opening of the admission portal afresh by the Higher Education Department (HED) was a short in the arm for the colleges as the student enrollment has increased by over 4500 students across Jammu and Kashmir.

As already reported by this newspaper, the HED had reopened the Centralised Samarth Admission Portal for the fresh admissions for students.

The admission was reopened afresh for the students who qualified the 10 2 bi-annual examination recently and those who missed earlier admission opportunities for "any reason". The portal was open from November 21 to November 28 of 2024.

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Director Colleges J&K Prof Sheikh Aijaz Bashir said the decision to reopen the admission portal had a great impact as 4500 new admissions were registered in the colleges across J&K.

Earlier, around 13000 students qualified the bi-annual class 12th examination.

The decision to reopen the Centralised Samarth Admission Portal for the fresh admissions for students was taken on the instruction of the Minister for Education Sakina Masood Itoo.

"The decision proved fruitful as we could accommodate more students in the colleges," the director of colleges J&K told Greater Kashmir.

Earlier, the HED said that the decision to reopen the admission portal was made following a request from you regarding fresh admission seekers. Earlier, the degree colleges witnessed a dip in the student enrollment in colleges throwing up a major challenge for the J&K government to address the issue.

In wake of this, the Director Colleges sought suggestions and feedback from the college principals to seek their suggestion to address the ‘major issue’.

Meanwhile the Director Colleges J&K told Greater Kashmir said the college principals have submitted their feedback besides various initiatives are being taken to improve the admission in the colleges.
