Elegies fill the air in Pulwama
Pulwama, July 17: The elegies filled the air for hours in some villages of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district as hundreds of Shia mourners on Wednesday took out processions to mark the 10th day of Muharram.
The mourners in Gangoo, Wokehrawan, and Hanjikhoul villages of the district took out a procession, which passed through various streets.
All three Shia-dominated villages were draped in black banners.
Sporting pitch-black dresses, the mourners sang elegies and beat their chests in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS).
Prominent Shia scholar, Ghulam Rasool Noori shed light on the philosophy behind the Ashura.
He said that the day belonged to the entire humanity.
“The day is observed against the oppression and tyranny,” he said.
Noori said that the day is observed to convey the message of Karbala to the people.
He impressed upon the people to tread the righteous path.
The district administration had made elaborate arrangements in the area with policemen dotting around the procession venues to ensure the culmination of peaceful and safe Muharram processions.
They had also set up multiple stalls to distribute water and other beverages among the mourners.
Members of the civil society and political activists also distributed water among the mourners.
The District Health Services had deployed medical teams near the procession sites to offer first-aid to the mourners.
