Dy CM inspects NIFT Budgam, urges modern training for artisans
Budgam, Sep 18: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday visited the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) campus in Budgam, where he inspected academic activities, laboratories, and ongoing infrastructure works, while calling for stronger linkages between students and local artisans.
Choudhary toured key facilities including the Garment Construction, Weaving, Jewellery-cum-Leather, and Photography labs, interacting with students and faculty about industry-oriented learning. He urged students to act as cultural ambassadors of Jammu and Kashmir by showcasing its craft heritage alongside contemporary design.
Highlighting the need to extend NIFT’s expertise beyond the campus, the Deputy CM directed the institute to hold specialised workshops for ITI trainees and craftspeople. “Equipping artisans with modern techniques will improve quality, enhance marketability and boost global demand for our indigenous products,” he said.
Responding to students’ requests, Choudhary assured that the government would work to develop a sports field near the campus to support extracurricular growth.
On infrastructure, he inspected ongoing developmental works, directing agencies to ensure quality standards and immediately address pending repairs. He emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to substandard construction.
NIFT Director Prof. Monika Gupta said community engagement is already embedded in the curriculum, with students regularly visiting districts to share technical know-how with artisans.
Choudhary expressed satisfaction with the institute’s progress and reaffirmed government support to make NIFT Budgam a leading hub for design, innovation, and skill development in J&K.
