A garbage dumping site in Dangerpora area of south Kashmir's Pulwama town causes immense hardships to residents and business men with mountains of garbage not only emitting overpowering smell, but also becoming a fire hazard.

A group of concerned citizens fears that the site could become a major cause of fire any time, threatening the entire area. "Last week , the muck suddenly caught fire, but the flames were fortunately put out by  the timely arrival of the fire tenders," said the residents. They said that if there had been any delay, the flames could have spread to adjoining areas.  The residents said that the dumping site had begun taking a toll on their health.

" We suffer from respiratory diseases and other allergies," said the residents. The dumping site has become a significant concern for several shops, food joints, and a degree college located nearby. The unpleasant smell, unsightly waste, and health hazards associated with the site deter customers and students alike.

Tariq Ahmad, a trader said that a rancid smell pervades through the area round the clock, discouraging the customers to visit their shops. " It has become rather difficult to run our businesses in the area," he  said.
