Dubjan winter carnival boosts tourism push in Shopian
Shopian, Feb 17:: The second edition of the Dubjan Winter Carnival was held on Tuesday in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, as authorities stepped up efforts to promote the area as an emerging winter tourism destination and stimulate local economic activity.
Organised by the J&K Tourism Department in collaboration with the district administration of Shopian, the event took place in the snow-covered meadows of Dubjan along the historic Mughal Road.
The carnival featured a range of cultural programmes, sports competitions and adventure activities. The venue was decorated for the occasion, with elaborate security and logistical arrangements in place to ensure the event ran smoothly.
Deputy Commissioner Shopian, Shishir Gupta, inaugurated the carnival as the chief guest and was welcomed by an NCC band. Marking the formal opening, he released pigeons as a symbol of peace and communal harmony and performed the traditional Izband Soz ritual, setting a cultural tone for the day.
Speaking to reporters, Gupta said the carnival was aimed at promoting tourism and placing local destinations on the map of prominent tourist hotspots.
“Such events not only highlight our scenic locations but also help local businesses flourish,” he said.
He noted that the closure of the Mughal Road during the winter months brings local shopkeepers’ and vendors’ business activity to a standstill. “Events like this can help revive economic activity in the area,” he added.
The Deputy Commissioner also visited various stalls and interacted with participating teams. Officials said several government departments had set up stalls to showcase public welfare schemes and outreach initiatives. A bike rally was flagged off as part of the carnival’s schedule.
Cultural performances by student groups and local artists — including folk songs, musical skits and band performances — drew applause from the audience. Organisers said the programme was designed to showcase regional heritage and encourage youth participation in cultural activities.
The Sports Department conducted competitions and demonstrations such as tug-of-war, martial arts displays and races, with enthusiastic participation from local residents and youth groups. Adventure activities, including horse riding, skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and snowmobile rides, also attracted significant interest from visitors.
