Driving on dilapidated service roads at Sanat Nagar turns into nightmare

Srinagar, Feb 21: Driving on service roads of upcoming flyover at Sanat Nagar crossing has turned into a nightmare for commuters due to dilapidated surface.

As work of the Sanat Nagar flyover is in full swing, however authorities have failed to provide smooth roads for hassle free traffic movement.

Poorly maintained service roads riddled with potholes, debris littering streets, and a lack of safety measures pose risk to commuters.

A group of commuters told Greater Kashmir that navigating through these uneven roads is like an obstacle course especially when it rains or snows.

They said that lack of adherence to safety measures during excavation and digging activities, raising fears of potential accidents and injuries.

"There are no visible safety precautions in place, making it extremely hazardous for pedestrians and motorists alike. The authorities need to prioritise safety of citizens and ensure proper implementation of safety protocols,” said a local shopkeeper.

Another resident, Sameer Ahmed said that there are no proper barricades, no warning signs to protect pedestrians or motorists from potential accidents.” It feels like they have forgotten about our safety amidst all the construction frenzy,” he said.

Besides that, many vehicles have skidded off the road due to the dug-up sections along the Bypass, making commuting difficult during rains and snowfall in Srinagar. On Tuesday evening a vehicle skidded off the dilapidated road and fell into an unmanned dug up portion of the flyover.

Chief Engineer, Roads and Building department (R&B), Sajad Ahmad told Greater Kashmir that safety measures are being implemented at the construction site.

"We have installed barricades and signboards to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents and commuters," he said.

He said that the construction of the Sanat Nagar flyover is on track for completion by September of this year.

"Installing safety measures gives a lot of relief to residents and commuters, ensuring a smoother construction process and minimizing potential risks. We always prioritise safety measures at construction sites," he said.
