Driver killed as tipper plunges into Dal Lake

Srinagar, Feb 15: A driver was killed after his tipper plunged into Dal Lake in wee hours today.

Officials said the incident occurred when the tipper skidded off the road near Makyee Park and plunged into Dal Lake resulting in on spot death of the driver. The deceased was identified as Tariq Ahmad Khatana, son of Muhammad Hussain of Kangan. A police official from the concerned police station said that the tipper bearing registration number JK06-2692 was retrieved from the lake.

“The incident happened around 6 am. We rushed to the spot and retrieved the body. FIR has been registered in this regard, and we have started an investigation into the incident. We have handed over the body to the family after completing medico-legal formalities,” said the official.

“It seems the driver lost control and rammed into an embankment,” he added.

To mention, there have been various incidents, particularly due to the overspeeding of tippers across Srinagar. In another incident on February 9, Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) rescued two persons after they were stuck inside a tipper after an accident at Nowshera area in Srinagar.

People of various localities have expressed concern over speeding tippers during night. They have appealed to authorities to check over-speeding of trucks and tippers to prevent accidents.
