Drinking water shortage hits Downtown areas | | Low precipitation has affected water supply: Officials
Srinagar, Feb 13: Several areas of the summer capital are reeling under drinking water shortage due to low precipitation in the last few months.
People from several areas of Downtown said that they are suffering as their taps are running dry.
Greater Kashmir received complaints from several areas of Downtown including Rainawari, Khwaja Bazar, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Malik Sahab, Makhdoom Sahab, Hawal, and adjoining localities, about water shortage.
The aggrieved residents said that some of them are facing minimal supply and in many households the taps are completely running dry. They said that authorities are supplying water as per shifts.
“We are reeling under massive water scarcity,” said Javaid Ahmad, a resident of the Kondabal area of Rainawari.
The residents said in absence of water supply they are unable to carry out their routine chores. The locals said that most of the time, there is very low pressure of water, and they are unable to fill their water tanks. “As a result of this, people have to use boosters to fill up their tanks. This creates more problems in the supply,” said Shahid Ahmad, a local from Gojwara area.
Officials from the PHE department said that due to prolonged dry spell till January, water resources were depleted to a major extent. They said that they are forced to supply water in shifts.
Ambreena Anjum, Executive Engineer PHE, said that tail-end areas are facing issues as the water supply was affected due to low precipitation. “In order to ensure water in every area, we have to resort to supplying water in shifts. If any area still faces the issue, we will send water tankers to ensure no inconvenience is caused to locals,” Anjum added.
