"I have just come to thank the school. I had never imagined my son would read since he is a special child. But given the dedication of the teachers at LRC (Learning Resource Cell), I now believe that he won’t just read but will shine, as do other normal children.”

This heartfelt expression of gratitude was echoed during the recent meeting with the Delhi Public School (DPS) Srinagar administration, where parents gathered to share their experiences and insights about their children’s education. The atmosphere was filled with appreciation for the school’s efforts, especially for its commitment to inclusive education by catering to special children through LRC, thus earning the distinction of being the only school in the valley that takes care of special children.

I could see the level of concern and hope that parents had for their special children. They recounted their joys and triumphs, highlighting the incredible progress their children have made under the guidance of the dedicated LRC teachers.

Among the most striking aspects was that, much like myself, the majority of parents found solace in the swift and attentive responses from the school teachers regarding any queries or concerns.

In a moving narrative, one parent shared a poignant reflection on the accessibility features within the school. Recalling the construction phase, he had envisioned the school’s ramp as a mere structural element. Little did he know that the same ramp would become an essential pathway for his special child, emphasizing the unforeseen impact of thoughtful infrastructure plan.

Regarding the heating systems in classrooms, especially during the chilly winters and the provision of a comfortable fleet of 150 buses, parents deeply appreciated the school’s commitment to providing facilities ensuring children’s comfort and overall well-being.

As a mother, I found immense encouragement when another parent shared a story where an eye issue of her child was detected during a routine checkup at school. Thanks to the timely intervention and advice from the school, her child’s eyesight was saved from irreversible damage. Gratitude resonated in her words as she thanked the school for its vigilance and care.

I am personally aware that the school’s career counseling cell, spearheaded by an enthusiastic teacher, actively identifies students’ potential and interests. They offer crucial guidance, especially to those inclined towards non-traditional subjects. One parent shared a personal experience, mentioning that despite their child securing the top position in science and mathematics during the 10th grade, they let their ward to pursue humanities. This showcased the school’s success in fostering an environment where students feel empowered to make choices aligned with their interests and passions, even if they differ from societal expectations.

The school presented a visual journey through 2023 via pictures, unveiling numerous activities that were previously unknown to us. From inclusive sports initiatives for special children—empowering them by affirming their equality—to educational visits to the Leprosy Colony, instilling a strong sense of social responsibility among students. The display of positions, awards and trophies underscored the school’s commitment to excellence in academics, sports, and co-curricular pursuits.

Amidst the celebrations, parents voiced concerns about societal challenges affecting children, including mobile phone use, bullying and the menace of drugs. The school administration responded earnestly, highlighting the strict ban on mobile phones within the school premises and school buses. Despite their efforts, they expressed disappointment at parents continuing to provide phones to their children, leading to repeated confiscations. Parents were urged not to give phones to their kids, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a focused learning environment.

Addressing bullying, the school administration assured parents that appropriate measures were being taken to prevent and address such issues promptly. The collaborative approach between parents and the school in addressing grievances, including bullying, was acknowledged as a positive step.

On the issue of the drug menace, the school assured parents that they are vigilant and actively working to prevent such problems within the school. The administration pledged to educate and create awareness about the harmful effects of drug use among students.

The meeting concluded with the administration emphasizing that the school is a collective responsibility, urging parents to collaborate and assist in ensuring a better future and holistic development for all children. The DPS Srinagar was lauded not just as an educational institution but as a true healer and a beacon of hope for all parents, especially those with special children. In the heartwarming stories and shared experiences, it was evident that DPS Srinagar is not just a school; it’s a caring community dedicated to the growth and well-being of every child.
