Dog menace triggers fear in Bilal Colony Soura
Srinagar, Nov 29: Residents of Bilal Colony in Soura are grappling with an alarming rise in stray dog attacks, forcing many—especially children and the elderly—to remain indoors, particularly during evening hours. The growing dog population in the locality has sparked fear and frustration, with locals urging authorities to intervene before the situation worsens.
The problem, residents say, has intensified over the past few weeks, with packs of stray dogs roaming freely near residential lanes, parks, shop fronts and garbage dumps. Several children have reportedly had close encounters while walking to tuition centres or playing outside, prompting parents to restrict their movement.
“Children and the elderly are scared to step out, especially in the evening. We are living in constant fear,” said Muhammad Niyaz, a resident of Bilal Colony. “Dogs chase people, bark at passersby, and gather in groups near garbage points. It has become very unsafe.”
The residents have appealed to Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to launch an urgent dog sterilisation and relocation drive in the area, along with regular garbage clearance to prevent strays from gathering.
