Srinagar, Oct 23: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, under the aegis of the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority, on Thursday organised an awareness programme at Central Jail, Srinagar, with the objective of spreading awareness among inmates regarding their legal rights and available legal remedies.

The programme was held under the chairmanship of Principal District and Sessions Judge, Srinagar, Tasleem Arief and was conducted under the supervision of Sub-Judge and Secretary, DLSA Srinagar, Sajad-ur-Rehman.

The programme focused on educating the inmates about the process of filing Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) before the Supreme Court of India and the assistance available through legal aid defence counsels.

Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel delivered an insightful session on the filing procedure of SLPs and apprised the inmates of their legal rights as undertrial prisoners.

Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsels spoke about ensuring access to justice at every crucial stage, including pre-arrest, arrest, and remand, and emphasised the importance of timely legal representation to safeguard constitutional rights.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to premature release, parole, and furlough of prisoners were also highlighted.

The awareness programme served as an important step towards promoting legal literacy, access to justice, and rehabilitation through informed awareness among the Jail inmates.
