Born on 17th November 1935 in Solina Payeen, Srinagar, Abdul Khaliq was captivated by football at a young age. He would often watch matches at the SP College ground during the era of Maharaja rule, where Friends Club was one of the most celebrated clubs. It was here he found his inspiration in the legendary goalkeeper Habibullah Dev, whose performances sparked a dream in the young Abdul.

Abdul Khaliq was part of a historic moment in 1958 when he represented Jammu & Kashmir at the Durand Cup in Delhi — the first time the state participated in this prestigious tournament. He would go on to play in the Durand Cup seven times, showcasing his brilliance on one of the biggest stages of Indian football.

He proudly represented the state at the Santosh Trophy on three occasions — in Andhra Pradesh, Guwahati, and Kerala — further cementing his place as one of the finest goalkeepers from the region. He briefly played for Food and Supplies FC before joining the Transport team (SRTC), where he remained a pillar of strength for 12 long years. With SRTC, he participated in numerous national-level tournaments such as the DCM (Delhi), Rovers Cup (Mumbai), and the All India Civil Services Tournament in Goa.

His career, which spanned over two decades, was marked by unwavering commitment, fearless gameplay, and unmatched goalkeeping skills.

Whether it was his towering presence in the goalpost, his incredible reflex saves, or his perfectly timed dives, Abdul Khaliq was a wall that strikers feared. Fans remember him as a player who stood like a fortress, especially during crucial moments in finals.

Following his retirement in 1974, Abdul Khaliq continued to serve the game he loved. He became a member of JKFA for three years and then transitioned into refereeing — becoming a qualified referee (1974 batch). For 12 years, he was recognised as one of the top referees in the state.

Abdul Khaliq was not just a footballer — he was a symbol of dedication, humility, and sportsmanship. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of footballers in Jammu & Kashmir.

“May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, grant him the highest place in Jannah, and bestow strength and sabr upon his family, friends, and the entire footballing fraternity,” the statement added.
