Director Sericulture suspends 2 officials over illegal Mulberry tree felling in Shopian

Srinagar, Jul 28: Two Sericulture departmental officials were suspended today after 12 fully grown mulberry trees were found illegally cut down in Sedew village, threatening the livelihood of local silkworm rearers and government assets worth lakhs.

Director Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, conducted a surprise inspection at the site and immediately ordered the suspension of the area in-charge and beat watcher for failing to protect the valuable trees.

“The illegal felling of mulberry trees causes enormous loss to government assets and poses a direct threat to the livelihood of silkworm rearers,” Bhat said, emphasising that mulberry foliage is the sole feed for silkworms.

The matter has been referred to police authorities for registration of a criminal case against the perpetrators. Bhat also directed the District Sericulture Officer to launch extensive plantation drives during the upcoming season to compensate for the losses.

Each mulberry tree requires several years of care and significant government investment to mature. The destruction not only impacts cocoon production but also affects farmers who depend on sericulture for their sustenance.

“Cutting down such valuable trees is equivalent to snatching the livelihood of poor silkworm rearers and their families,” the Director stated, warning that such actions would not be tolerated.

Bhat appealed to citizens to act as guardians of J&K’s “mulberry wealth” and report illegal activities to the department’s helpline (0194-2313247) for swift action against violators.

The Director reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding mulberry plantations across the Union Territory, not just for current stakeholders but also for future generations and ecological harmony.
