Director Sericulture J&K visits Udhampur cocoon auction market
Udhampur, Jul 11: Director Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, today visited the Cocoon Auction Market in Udhampur, where hundreds of silkworm rearers and cocoon buyers participated with enthusiasm.
During the visit, Bhat inspected the market operations and reviewed arrangements to ensure a smooth, transparent, and efficient auction process. He emphasised the need for adequate facilities, hygiene, and a supportive atmosphere to benefit both sellers and buyers.
Speaking to stakeholders, the Director shared that over 60,000 kilograms of green cocoons had already been procured, primarily by buyers from outside the Union Territory. Transactions worth more than Rs 2.5 crore have taken place so far, with the highest recorded price at Rs 1,600 per kilogram. Since July 1, over 1,600 silkworm rearers have sold their produce at the Udhampur market, reflecting strong participation and confidence. In light of the large turnout, the auction will continue for an additional week.
Bhat reiterated the department's focus on strengthening market access, particularly for rural and remote farmers. Noting that over 70 percent of cocoon produce is currently sold outside J&K, he stressed the importance of developing local marketing channels and bringing more buyers into the region.
He was accompanied by the District Sericulture Officer, Udhampur, along with senior officials and field staff, underlining the department’s commitment to supporting silkworm growers through improved infrastructure, training, and forward market linkages.
The ongoing activity at the Udhampur Cocoon Auction Market is part of broader efforts to make Jammu and Kashmir a leading hub of high-quality silk production in the country.
