Direct selling can drive economic growth, youth empowerment in J&K: Satish Sharma
Srinagar, July 3: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, on Wednesday underscored the transformative role of the direct selling industry in empowering youth, promoting ethical entrepreneurship, and accelerating inclusive economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
He was speaking at a conclave organised by the Federation of Indian Direct Selling Industries on the theme “Regulations, Innovations and Growth,” focusing on the future of direct selling and consumer markets in India.
Addressing industry leaders, dignitaries, and delegates, the Minister commended their shared commitment to building a robust and transparent direct selling ecosystem both in the region and across the country. He described the sector as a dynamic and resilient force capable of reaching grassroots communities and contributing meaningfully to the evolving consumer landscape.
Sharma emphasised the importance of a strong regulatory framework to instill trust in the industry and safeguard consumers. He said that clear and comprehensive regulations are not just desirable but necessary for protecting consumers from malpractices and for ensuring fair competition among stakeholders. Trust, he noted, forms the bedrock of direct selling, and well-defined rules are key to maintaining that trust.
Reaffirming the J&K government’s support, the Minister assured that all steps would be taken to promote ethical practices, responsible business conduct, and consumer protection. He stated that the administration is committed to removing ambiguities in the regulatory environment to boost investor confidence and unlock the full potential of the sector.
Highlighting the role of direct selling in employment generation and entrepreneurship, Sharma said the industry offers unique opportunities for youth and women to pursue self-employment and develop essential skills. He noted that the low entry barriers in the sector make it particularly effective in driving local economic growth and job creation.
The Minister also said that the government is creating a business-friendly environment to attract investment from direct selling companies in the Union Territory. He called the sector a vital pillar of Jammu and Kashmir’s economic resurgence and stressed that its future growth must be firmly rooted in innovation and a steadfast commitment to consumer rights.
Concluding his address, Sharma said direct selling has the potential to be a major force for sustainable development and responsible enterprise in India. He urged stakeholders to collectively strengthen consumer trust and ensure the sector continues to serve as a model of ethical growth and empowerment.
