Pulwama, June 30: Director Sericulture Jammu and Kashmir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat today inaugurated a second silkworm rearing pilot project in District Pulwama. This initiative aims to achieve multiple silkworm rearings in various parts of the Kashmir Division, mirroring practices in other states.

During his visit, Bhat inspected the incubation and Chawki rearing of the second-rearing seed, which will be distributed among identified farmers in the district. He highlighted that this is the first time the department has introduced a second rearing immediately after the spring rearing on a pilot basis in selected areas across different districts of Kashmir Division.

The Director outlined comprehensive plans to boost cocoon production and support silkworm rearers, farmers, women, and youth in earning a dignified livelihood. These efforts align with the objectives of the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP).

Bhat emphasized the department's goal of doubling cocoon production and farmers' income in J&K. He revealed that 23,000 DFLs (Disease Free Layings) of locally produced acid-treated hybrid seed are being prepared for distribution to 250 registered rearers across Kashmir Division.

Highlighting the importance of multiple rearings to increase cocoon production, Bhat called for the development of latest technologies by research institutes to benefit farmers. He announced plans for special training programs to improve cocoon producers' skills for such rearings.

The Director stressed that sericulture, being a traditional industry, can significantly improve the economic conditions of rural communities with minimal initial investment. He concluded his tour by calling for sustained efforts and cooperation from all stakeholders for the inclusive development of the sericulture sector.
