Srinagar, Sep 17: Ajaz Ahmad Bhat,  Director Sericulture J&K, on Wednesday urged officers to accelerate the implementation of key schemes under CAPEX, Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), and other Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) to strengthen the sericulture sector and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

Addressing officers at the Directorate of Sericulture, Srinagar, Bhat highlighted that timely utilisation of funds and effective field monitoring are critical to ensuring that silkworm rearers and associated stakeholders receive the intended benefits.

“The sericulture sector is not just a traditional livelihood; it is an eco-friendly and economically vital activity that can significantly uplift rural households if managed efficiently,” he said.

The review meeting focused on progress in cocoon production, silkworm seed distribution, and mulberry plantation expansion across Kashmir. Bhat stressed that quality seed production and broader plantation coverage are essential to revitalise the sector and enhance productivity.

He also instructed officers to maintain transparency in all operations, provide full support to farmers, and adopt a results-oriented approach to ensure measurable outcomes from CAPEX, HADP, and CSS schemes. “Our objective is to put the sericulture sector on a sustainable growth trajectory, creating income opportunities for farmers and youth,” Bhat added.

The Director’s call comes amid efforts to restore the sector’s traditional prominence in the region, improve rural incomes, and boost Kashmir’s eco-friendly industries. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from officers to strengthen sericulture and contribute to the broader rural economy. Officers from Jammu participated virtually, ensuring a unified review across the Union Territory.
