Dilapidated roads take sheen off Srinagar
Srinagar, Jan 14: Failure of authorities to undertake repairs of dilapidated roads in the summer capital is subjecting commuters to immense inconvenience.
The deteriorating condition of the city's roads is not just a matter of inconvenience; it is a pressing issue that raises questions about adequacy of maintenance and its profound impact on daily life and local economy.
With the roads in Srinagar continuing to crumble, residents are devising alternative routes to navigate the city's dilapidated infrastructure. The deteriorating conditions have compelled locals to find creative paths, avoiding the most hazardous areas and seeking smoother journeys through the city.
Several roads including Nowpora, Khanyar, Bohri Kadal and Nowhatta are dilapidated after construction of drainage systems. Winding through numerous areas in Srinagar reveals a disheartening decline in road infrastructure. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and crumbling edges have turned once-smooth roads into hazardous paths for pedestrians and motorists alike. The severity of the situation demands urgent intervention from the Municipal authorities.
The historic Downtown, known for its centuries-old architecture, is now marred by the stark contrast between its grand structures and the dilapidated roads beneath.
Shopkeepers and businessmen allege a noticeable decline in footfall, as visitors hesitate to navigate the treacherous paths. The once-bustling markets now resonate with declining footfall with each passing day.
"It's disheartening to see the condition of the roads in the city. The authorities need to act swiftly before it affects our daily lives and importantly the tourism industry, which is a vital part of our economy," said Abdul Rouf, a Downtown resident.
Residents in Old Srinagar are exploring alternative paths that bypass the most affected areas. Narrow lanes and alleys within the old city are being utilized to avoid the crumbling roads and pothole-ridden streets by them.
Some residents who live in the city outskirts of Srinagar are choosing longer but less damaged rural roads to access the downtown area.
Public transportation has become a daunting challenge, with buses and taxis having to navigate the battered roads cautiously.
Despite these assurances, residents remain cautiously optimistic, given past promises of action that failed to yield substantial improvements on the ground. The immediate future of Srinagar's road infrastructure remains uncertain, leaving locals and business owners on edge as they await tangible steps towards resolving this pressing issue.
Officials of Srinagar Municipal Corporation said that they understand the concerns raised by people regarding the condition of the roads. “We are working closely with the concerned departments for immediate repairs. We are committed to restoring Srinagar’s glory," the officials said.
