Dilapidated drainage system pesters Gojwara residents
Srinagar, Sep 27: Dilapidated drainage system at Gojwara area of Downtown is causing inconvenience to locals and pedestrians.
A delegation of from the area said that slab of drainage has cracked for a long time. They said that the issue is not only leading to a defective drainage network but also posing a risk of accidents.
“Over the past few weeks, many people fell in the drainage hole. Several times, children had a narrow escape due to the issue. It is a death trap, and this can lead to some major accidents if left unattended,” said Bilal Ahmad, a local. The locals said the drainage issue is in the middle of the link road and commuters are also having a tough time. They said people riding two-wheelers have to navigate it, while putting themselves at risk.
“The dilapidated drainage has been partially covered by a wooden plank. These temporary solutions won’t work, and people will continue to face issues unless it is completely fixed,” said another local.
The locals said that during downpours, the waterlogging from the drainage creates a cesspool in the area. They said elderly and other locals face tough time after the sundown due to darkness in by lanes.
Officials from SMC and SSCL have been saying that they are upgrading drainage around downtown, and many drainage networks have been augmented so far.
“We will look into the issue and address it accordingly so that locals don’t face any inconvenience,” an SMC official said.
