Srinagar, Jul 2: In a show of commitment and on-ground leadership, Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, undertook a road journey from Jammu to Srinagar, personally reviewing security arrangements along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway in preparation for annual Amarnath Yatra which began on Wednesday .

The DGP was accompanied by Special DGP (Coordination) S.J.M. Gillani and other senior officers. The visit came shortly after Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of Amarnath pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. During the journey, DGP Prabhat made scheduled halts to interact with deployed officers and security personnel. He met with the Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of Udhampur, Ramban, South Kashmir and Central Kashmir districts, reviewing on-ground deployments and briefing troops on the current threat landscape.

“The dedication and readiness is reassuring,” DGP Nalin Prabhat was quoted as saying by an officer in Udhampur. “Our forces are committed, alert, and working in full synergy to ensure the peaceful and safe conduct of the Yatra. I urge all personnel to maintain heightened vigil and not lower the guard at any point.”

The  pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave Shrine located in the Himalayas of South Kashmir has traditionally posed logistical and security challenges, particularly due to its terrain and threat perception. Security forces have been tasked with securing the twin routes of Baltal (Sonamarg) and Pahalgam (Anantnag), in addition to securing the highway lifeline connecting Jammu with Srinagar. The DGP urged the importance of inter-agency coordination, especially between the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and the Indian Army, which together form the multilayered security grid. “This Yatra is not just a religious event, but a symbol of peace and communal harmony. It is our shared duty to ensure every pilgrim feels safe,” he was quoted as saying.

Besides reviewing security, DGP Prabhat also took time to interact with pilgrims along the way. Many yatris expressed appreciation for the security arrangements and the visible presence of uniformed personnel. The DGP’s journey marks a strong message of leadership by example, and underlines the priority being given to this annual pilgrimage — both as a religious occasion and a test of coordination for security forces in a sensitive region.
