Devise mechanism for direct rail connectivity: KCCI
The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) urged the government to explore alternative solutions for enhancing direct train connectivity between Srinagar and New Delhi, following reports of a new policy requiring passengers to de-board at Katra for fresh boarding.
In a statement issued by Secretary General KCCI, Faiz Bakshi emphasised the importance of a direct train service, expressing concerns that the current protocol could negatively impact travel efficiency and deter potential visitors.
"KCCI has requested the government to consider devising an alternate mechanism for establishing direct connectivity to Delhi of the proposed de-boarding of passengers at Katra—going through fresh boarding at Katra to optimise travel efficiency as reported by a section of the media."
The KCC&I has requested Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Railway Minister to consider our request for the direct train service from Delhi to Srinagar.
KCCI has expressed appreciation for two transformative infrastructure projects: the Delhi-Srinagar rail connectivity and the Z-Morh tunnel, marking a new era in Kashmir's accessibility.
The Chamber extends its gratitude to both the Central Government and the J&K government for prioritising these crucial connectivity projects that will reshape J&K's transportation landscape.
The Delhi-Srinagar railway line addresses a long-standing challenge faced by the region, particularly during winter months when the Srinagar-Jammu Highway's weather-related closures severely impact businesses and residents alike. This rail connectivity will be a game-changer for the region's economic stability and growth, providing year-round reliable transportation independent of weather conditions.
The Chamber notes that the new rail link will also help to regulate airfares, which currently exceed costs of some international travel destinations. This development promises to enhance business connectivity with the rest of India while improving accessibility for both tourists and local residents.
The KCCI also commends the inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel which is scheduled to be inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on January 13, recognising its significant impact on promoting tourism in Sonamarg and improving accessibility to Leh. This development is expected to substantially enhance the region's tourism potential and ensure year-round connectivity. The Chamber remains committed to working with government authorities to further enhance Kashmir's infrastructure and economic development, viewing these projects as crucial steps toward the region's prosperity.
