Demise of Er Ghulam Nabi Shah condoled

Srinagar, Nov  4: Demise of Ghulam Nabi Shah, retired Chief Engineer has been widely condoled by people from different walks of life.

Shah passed away on November 1 at his residence at Kral Sangri area of Nishat. People from different sections of the society condoled his demise and hailed his contribution for the development of the power sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

Born in 1932 in Srinagar, Shah received his elementary education at Islamia School Rajouri Kadal. After passing his Board Examination he sought admission at Amar Singh College Srinagar, Thereafter for pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering he travelled all the way far South to Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.

An enthusiastic sportsman and an avid Cricketer, he served as general secretary of JK Cricket Association for a long time. During his tenure he made significant contributions to strengthen and invigorate the Association and infuse it with the true spirit of sportsmanship.

As an eminent engineer, Shah made prolific contributions to the hydrology of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in general and to the valley in particular. He selflessly dedicated himself to all the hydraulic matters concerning the state.

A pioneer in harnessing the potential of hydropower, Shah started the concept of mini hydel projects in far flung areas, bringing the much-needed relief to those

yearning for electricity. He will be fondly remembered as being one of the leading Engineer of the state who was involved with the Indus

Water Treaty and other such important landmarks, over a period spanning more than 35 years. Besides, he also represented the country multiple times as a distinguished member of the delegation on Secretarial Level Meetings between India and Pakistan on water issues related to the region.

A corporate member of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a permanent member of the Central Water Commission Er Shah lent unwavering commitment and support to the well-being of the society at large and to the institution he represented. As a celebrated leader and path finder in his specialised field he left indelible footprints which will continue to infuse and inspire the careers of numerous aspiring engineers in the generations to come.
