Delhi High Court Judge denies cash discovery allegations, calls it a conspiracy

New Delhi, Mar 23: Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma has denied allegations regarding the recovery of unaccounted cash from his residence, calling it a "conspiracy to frame and malign" him. Justice Varma’s response, submitted to Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya of the Delhi High Court on March 22, comes amid an ongoing in-house probe initiated by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The controversy stems from a fire that broke out on the evening of March 14 at an outhouse within Justice Varma’s residential compound.

According to reports by Bar & Bench, fire personnel responding to the incident allegedly discovered large sums of unaccounted cash at the site. However, in his written reply, Justice Varma categorically refute these claims, stating that neither he nor his family had ever stored cash in the outhouse. "I state unequivocally that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by me or any of my family members and strongly denounce the suggestion that the alleged cash belonged to us," Justice Varma asserted in his statement. He further questioned the plausibility of such allegations, arguing that it was "preposterous" to assume that anyone would store cash in an open and commonly used storeroom near the staff quarters.

The judge also pointed out that media outlets failed to verify claims before publishing allegations against him. "I only wish that the media had conducted some enquiry before I came to be indicted and defamed in the press," he lamented as reported by Bar and Bench.
