Delhi Court issues notice to Sonia Gandhi, Police over electoral roll plea
New Delhi, Dec 9: A Delhi court on Tuesday issued notices to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police after a plea challenged a Magistrate’s refusal to order an FIR over her alleged inclusion in the 1980 electoral roll before she became an Indian citizen, Bar & Bench reported.
Special Judge (PC Act) Vishal Gogne heard brief submissions from Senior Advocate Pavan Narang, representing petitioner Vikas Tripathi, and sought replies from both sides.
The matter will be heard again on January 6, 2026. Tripathi has challenged the September 11 order of ACMM Vaibhav Chaurasiya, who held that issues of citizenship fall under the Centre and electoral roll matters lie with the Election Commission. Conducting an inquiry, the Magistrate said, would violate Article 329. Tripathi alleges Gandhi’s name was added to the New Delhi voter list in 1980, removed in 1982, and re-added in 1983, implying possible forgery. Narang told the court that despite approaching police, no FIR was filed, and urged at least a preliminary investigation.
