New Delhi, Dec 11: A Delhi court on Thursday granted interim bail to former JNU scholar and Delhi riots conspiracy accused Umar Khalid so he can attend his sister’s wedding.

Bar & Bench reported that Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai allowed Khalid to remain on bail from December 16 to 29, noting the request pertained to the marriage of his “real sister”.

“Considering the fact that the marriage is of the real sister of the applicant, the application is allowed,” the court said, directing him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 20,000 with two sureties of the same amount.

The court imposed strict conditions: Khalid is barred from using social media and may interact only with family members, relatives, and friends.

He must stay at home or at the venues of the listed wedding ceremonies.

Khalid had sought bail from December 14; the wedding is scheduled for December 27, reports Bar & Bench.

Arrested in September 2020, Khalid faces charges of criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly and other offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

He was previously granted a week-long interim bail in December 2024 to attend a cousin’s wedding.

The Supreme Court on December 10 reserved its verdict on the regular bail pleas filed by Khalid and five co-accused.

Senior advocate Trideep Pais, assisted by advocate Sanya Kumar, appeared for Khalid, while Special Public Prosecutors Amit Prasad, Madhukar Pandey and Anirudh Mishra, with other lawyers, represented Delhi Police.
