Defunct drainage system takes sheen off Lal Chowk

Srinagar, Sep 24: Despite Lal Chowk being showcased as the heart of Srinagar city, the defunct drainage system near the historic Clock Tower and the SRTC Bus Yard causes immense inconvenience to commuters.

A group of aggrieved commuters said the issue has persisted in the area for a long time, creating cesspools of stagnant water during the rains. They said that even though the region remains relatively dry on sunny days like these, the problem reoccurs during downpours.

Locals and shopkeepers around the bustling stretch said the problem not only causes inconvenience but also poses serious health hazards.

“We wade through pools of dirty water whenever it rains. This is supposed to be the city’s showcase zone, but it’s in a mess,” said Abdul Raheem, a commuter who crosses the area daily.

Passengers who board buses near the SRTC yard complained that the situation becomes unbearable during downpours. “We have to jump across puddles and at times, step into ankle-deep water just to catch a bus. This is the city centre, but the drainage is worse than in some villages,” said Shahid Ahmad, a passenger.

Bus drivers, too, voiced frustration. “The stagnant water damages our vehicles and slows down traffic. Many of us end up stuck during heavy rains,” said a driver.

Residents pointed out that such conditions tarnish Lal Chowk’s image. They said it defaces the heart of Srinagar and reflects badly on tourists who visit the iconic clock tower. "This is where tourists, dignitaries, and officials visit frequently. Yet, nothing changes. This presents the city in a very shabby light,” a local said.

A senior official from Srinagar Smart City Limited told  Greater Kashmir that directions have already been issued for a permanent fix.

“We have instructed the concerned contractor to address the drainage problem permanently. The work will be carried out so that pedestrians and passengers don’t face any issues in the future,” the official said.
