Srinagar, Jan 24: Multi-tier security arrangements, including the deployment of drones and spotters, have been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of Republic Day celebrations in Kashmir, Inspector General of Police (IGP) VK Birdi said on Friday.

The main function will be held at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar, where a full dress rehearsal took place amidst tight security measures.

Speaking to reporters after the rehearsal, IGP Birdi said that robust measures are in place to provide a secure environment for participants. “Proper and secure arrangements have been made for functions across Kashmir,” he said. “Multi-tier security arrangements are being implemented, and continuous surveillance is being maintained to ensure a peaceful and smooth conduct of the celebrations.”

Addressing concerns about potential threats, VK Birdi said that the police are keeping a close watch on “bad elements,” including surrendered terrorists. “The police have their own Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to handle such issues. We are conducting surveillance on these elements as per the law,” he said.

Responding to questions about the alleged involvement of influential individuals in the narcotics trade, IGP Kashmir assured that the police are committed to taking action against habitual offenders. “These matters are under investigation. However, habitual offenders and those who violate the law will face strict action,” he said.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, VK Bidhuri, who was also present at the rehearsal, underlined the importance of public participation in the celebrations. “This is a festival of the people, and we encourage everyone to join. The Bakshi Stadium has been chosen as the venue to accommodate a larger audience,” he said.

Bidhuri assured that the arrangements for this year’s event are significantly better than those in previous years. “We want more people to come and celebrate. There is no need for special passes; an identity card is sufficient to gain entry to the venue,” he explained.

The Bakshi Stadium, which underwent renovations to enhance seating capacity and infrastructure, has been a traditional venue for national celebrations in the Valley.

In addition to the arrangements in Srinagar, comprehensive security measures have been implemented across the Valley. Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been deployed at strategic locations, while checkpoints have been set up to monitor vehicular movement. Special instructions have been issued to police personnel to remain vigilant and coordinate with other security agencies.
