Anantnag, Jan 10: In a monumental stride towards agricultural transformation in Anantnag, the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Anantnag, Dr Syed Fakhrudin Hamid inaugurated the first-ever Medicinal Aromatic Plants Germplasm Bank at Verinag.

Spanning five hectares of land reclaimed through an anti-encroachment drive, the bank, owned by the Department of Agriculture Production and Farmers Welfare aims to address the increasing demand for herbal drugs and cosmetics by facilitating the production and distribution of planting material for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

Underlining the initiative's significance, DDC planted the inaugural lavender cuttings, symbolizing the commencement of a project poised to expand cultivation in the region. As many as 20,000 cuttings will be transplanted, marking a pivotal step in harnessing the potential of Anantnag's agro-climatic conditions for Medicinal plant cultivation.

The MAP Germplasm Bank, a pivotal component of the Horticulture and Agro-based Industries Development Programme (HADP), is anticipated to drive substantial growth in the agriculture and allied sectors. This transformative venture aims to elevate the local economy, bolster productivity, and fortify resilience in the existing agricultural system.
