Srinagar, Mar 24: Acting swiftly on an anonymous complaint, the Child Welfare Committee, Srinagar, headed by Khair-ul-Nisa conducted a surprise visit of an unregistered Child Care Institution (CCI) Al-Muzamil Welfare Trust, Lawaypora, Srinagar, and rescued 26 children from there.

A statement of the CWC Srinagar issued here said that Khair-ul-Nissa was accompanied by members Nuzhat-un-Nisa, Misbah Rashid, Beenish Kazmi, and Shahid Ahmad with the proactive support of the District Child Protection Officer, Mukhtar Ahmad, Station House Officer Ranbir Singh, Police Station, Shalteng and Child Helpline Srinagar.

“On June 16, 2023, at 8:30 pm, 13 children were rescued from the orphanage by this committee after an unnatural death of 16-year-old orphan placed therein. The CCI continues with its illegal operations of housing the vulnerable children, clearly against the brazen violation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and the established law,” Khair-ul-Nissa said.

“During the inspection, 26 children (all boys) were found residing in the institution under questionable conditions. Of these, 22 children belong to district Bandipora while four are from district Kupwara,” the CWC statement said.

“Given the circumstances, the committee immediately intervened and ensured the safe rescue of the children housed in the orphanage. All the rescued children have been temporarily placed in one of the registered CCI’s JK Yateem Khana, Rahat Manzil, Bemina, as per the provisions of the JJ Act, 2015, until they are reunited with their families or transferred to the respective Child Welfare Committees of their home districts for their further rehabilitation,” it said.

The statement said that the in-charge of the orphanage along with its staff has been apprehended by the concerned Police and necessary legal proceedings have been initiated.

It said that this committee commends and appreciates the swift action and cooperation of the Station House Officer, Police Station, Shalteng and in ensuring the safety and well-being of the children.

“The Child Welfare Committee, Srinagar, urges the public to report any instances of illegal child care institutions, child abuse, or exploitation to the authorities, ensuring that every child receives the protection and care they deserve,” the statement said.
