Ganderbal, Sep 16: Department of Economics, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organised a lecture on “Empowering Investors through Education” by Bilal Ahmad Hakeem, Market Trainer associated with institutions including NSE, BSE, CDSL, and NSDL, at the varsity’s Green campus here on Tuesday.

The event aimed to promote financial literacy, deepen understanding of investment principles, and foster responsible participation in capital markets among postgraduate students.

Welcoming the guest, Dr Masroor Ahmad, HoD Economics, highlighted the significance of Financial Literacy, especially when a person intends to harness the financial market for personal income using his valuable savings.

Addressing the students, Bilal Ahmad Hakeem, gave a comprehensive overview on the basics of the stock market, including the types of securities, the role of stock exchanges, and the mechanisms for trading and settlement. He emphasised the importance of financial literacy as a vital skill for responsible investing, and discussed how informed investors can shield themselves from market volatility and fraud.

He elaborated on the new SEBI initiative titled “SMARTs Investor Awareness Programme”. “This programme is designed to impart targeted education to investors to enhance their understanding of market operations, legal rights, and risk management,” he said. Hakim gave examples of how such initiatives can empower investors, especially first-time participants, and help promote trust and transparency in the financial system.

The session fostered an environment for critical discussion on market risks and the importance of regulatory frameworks—especially relevant given the increasing penetration of stock trading among new investors.
