Srinagar, Feb 27: The Vice Chancellor (VC) Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Prof. A Ravinder Nath said that the varsity can think of expansion in terms of introduction of more courses, once the varsity gets its permanent campus ready.

The Vice Chancellor was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function organised at Kashmir University a few days ago.

“The courses will be increased because as per our mandate we have to start 53 courses in the university out of which, we have 21 departments as of now,” he said.

He said a proposal has been submitted to the Government of India for creation of infrastructure which is in their active consideration

“The proposal has been submitted and now we will come to know about the positive response from the government by this month. Once our own buildings are ready, we can expand further,” he said.

About the non-availability of hostel facilities for the students at CUK for many years now, the VC said the varsity will ensure hostel accommodation to the students during this year.

“We have proposed to construct a hostel for 1000 students-500 each girls and boys. We intend to make the intake capacity at least 3000 to 5000 and expect that 50 percent of the students can have residential accommodation at the varsity,” he said.

Notably, over the years the CUK has failed to attract the students for their admissions majorly because of the non-availability of hostel facilities. The varsity has failed to provide hostel accommodation to the students post August 2019.

Owing to this, the seats in various departments of the CUK have remained vacant forcing the varsity to provide spot admission to the students in various courses.

“CUK must be known as one of the premier institutions of the country and should have residential campuses, not only for the local students but students from across the country who are part of this institution,” VC CUK said.

He said that CUK is an integral part of India and represents the whole nation as students from outside states are also part of the university.

“Local students will meet and interact with students from other states and learn cultural habits and languages. They will develop friendship and learn from each other,” he said.

The VC expressed his optimism that in the coming two to three years, CUK will take shape to be known as a “perfect institution” in the country.
