CSIR IIIM hosts science workshop for Army Goodwill School students

Srinagar, Aug 09: The CSIR Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) conducted a two-day hands-on workshop under the CSIR Jigyasa programme for students from Army Goodwill Schools in Wayne Kupwara and Hajinar, Tanghdar. The event, held from August 8-9, 2024, aimed to foster scientific curiosity among young learners.

Organised under the guidance of Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR IIIM Jammu, and supervised by Er. Ab Rahim, Head of IIIM (Br) Srinagar, the workshop welcomed 55 students and faculty members. Participants were introduced to various scientific techniques, including DNA isolation, electrophoresis, microscopy, and cell culture in the microbiology lab. The chemistry lab demonstrations covered pH testing, TLC, acid-base titration, and organic compound isolation.

Dr. Shahid Rasool, Senior Scientist, highlighted CSIR India's multi-sectoral research and CSIR-IIIM Jammu's role in regional development. He emphasized technological advancements in agriculture, particularly smart technologies and IoT-based crop models.

Dr. Khursheed A. Bhat, Coordinator of the CSIR Jigyasa Programme, stressed the importance of developing scientific temperament among students. He discussed the role of science in addressing global challenges such as climate change and antibiotic resistance.

Dr. Syed Riyaz-ul-Hassan Andrabi, Senior Principal Scientist, provided an overview of CSIR initiatives for aspiring scientists. He noted Jigyasa's significant impact on promoting scientific learning and increasing interest in science careers among youth.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session and a certificate distribution ceremony for the participants.
