Cricket fever unshaken by Kashmir heatwave
Srinagar, Jun 23: Soaring temperatures and persistent heatwaves may have disrupted daily routines across Kashmir, but on the cricket fields, the energy remains undiminished. Local tournaments are in full swing, with players and spectators showing up in large numbers, braving the heat for the love of the game.
"The heat may be intense, but that is not stopping me from playing my favourite game," said Touseef Ahmad, a cricket player from Srinagar.
He said from Srinagar to Baramulla, Anantnag, and Budgam, cricket grounds have turned into hotspots of youthful energy and community gatherings. Players are turning up, while spectators too are making their way to the grounds.
Several tournament organisers said that on a daily basis almost two matches are scheduled and that no team refuses to play due to heatwave conditions.
“Whatever the weather conditions, both players and fans show up to the ground. There is hardly any no-show due to the heatwave conditions.
However, we ensure there is enough drinking water available for players during the game,” said an organiser.
These tournaments, often named after local heroes, areas, or clubs, are not just about competition but also about community bonding. In many areas, they have become a cultural staple of the summer season.
Cricket observer and chief editor of online sports portal JK Sports Time, Mushtaq Ahmad War, while speaking to Greater Kashmir, said,
“Right now, there is an intense heat wave going on across Kashmir. But when it comes to cricket, there is absolutely no effect — not even 0%. All the tournaments are running smoothly across the Valley. The enthusiasm is untouched.”
When asked about the motivation driving players despite the harsh conditions, he added, “Many players are paid to participate. For them, this is not just a game; it is also about earning their livelihood. Heat is no barrier when bread and passion are on the line. Cricket is in fashion here. Whether it is love for the sport or the need to earn, the game continues.”
While health experts in the valley have advised precautions during peak daytime hours, the valley's cricketing spirit continues to push through the heatwave.
